Leadwork refers to the application or repair of lead flashing, an essential part of roofs which keeps the system watertight and weather proof. When compromised, lead flashing can let in moisture and lead to leaks that can quickly worsen and put your property at risk of serious water damage.

But how can leadwork be compromised? Lead Codes

The installation of lead flashing isn’t a simple, “one size fits all” service; it’s distinctly bespoke, governed by what are referred to as lead codes. These dictate the weight and thickness of lead sheet and their suitability for particular tasks. Ensuring that the correct lead code is used makes it so the flashing will last a very long time. In fact, when correctly installed by skilled roofers like our own, flashing will often outlast the life of a property. But when the wrong lead code is employed, or the installation itself is botched, rapid deterioration can set in and cause major problems.

Lead codes range from Code 3 (1.32mm, and 3 lbs per square foot), to Code 8 (3.55mm, 8 lbs per square foot). To give some examples, cover flashings used where flat roofing turns up against a wall calls for Code 4 sheets, while Code 3 is typically suitable for soakers, and Code 5-8 flashing is often employed for chimney flashings, ridges, hips, roll ends and drips. But flashing is also employed for pitched valley gutters, box and tapered gutters, flat roof coverings and windows; whatever the task, our team will employ the right coded sheets and proven techniques to ensure workmanship is of the highest possible standard.
